The Azlan Shah Cup is Asias premier annual mens hockey tournament. It is currently held in Ipoh, Malaysia during the first half of each year.

The teams are by invitation and typically include several of the world power-houses of hockey. Besides the host nation Malaysia, teams generally include Australia, New Zealand, India, Pakistan and South Korea. Holland, Belgium and Egypt together with Argentina have also been represented during previous campaigns.
Host nation faced off against Japan in the final game on day 1. The 10 pm start was very late due to bad storms in the area. Malaysia should have finished Japan early but just failed to convert when it mattered most. Japan were very fast on the break but did not seem to have a plan when they reached the D. It was more or less shoot on entry. A 1 all draw was a huge boost for Japan and a loss of 2 points for Malaysia.
